Assistive technology is diverse in several aspects. There is AT that ranges from low tech through high tech. AT can be used in various settings such as in homes, school, outdoors and indoors in general. Assistive technology is not discriminatory and is available for all people of different races, ages and gender. Examples of AT that can be in a home are ramps or grab bars in a shower. In addition, pencil grips, large print textbooks and books on tape may be found in a school setting.
Categories of Assistive Technology
- Low Tech AT is low cost, simple and has limited capability.
- Mid Tech AT can be expensive but not as expensive as high tech AT. Mid tech AT may be used in addition to a low tech AT.
- High Tech AT is expensive and requires high maintenance.
