Funding for assistive technology
Funding for AT is something that must be considered during the AT selection process. Although low tech AT may be inexpensive, high tech can be extremely costly- requiring financial assistance.
Whether or not there is an adequate amount of funding for AT can determine if a student receives the necessary AT he or she needs as well as training. This is why it is crucial to know and understand the funding resources that are available. Please take the time to watch this YouTube video about resources for funding assistive technology.
IDEA requires that school districts provide assistive technology devices and services at no charge to students' families if the AT is necessary for students to benefit from a free appropriate public education.
Aside from funding that is provided through schools, there are are funding options provided medically.
Medicaid: a joint federal- state program that provides funding for medical care, rehabilitation, and other services for someone who meets eligibility for financial needs.
Family Private health care: Parents may elect to use their private insurance rather than school funds to pay for AT. If a parent chooses to do this, they own the assistive technology device, but that does not negate the school's obligation to provide AT services.
